About Bread and Money

"If the anti-dietary fat, high carbohydrate, highly processed food diet that the experts have championed for the past 30 years has not worked for us, isn't it time we started asking questions? Better yet, isn't it time we began looking for another solution."

Whoever coined the phrase, "Change is difficult," knew what they were talking about. We can't help wondering if they had dieting in mind. Not long ago, we were two of the many millions of Americans who suffered from a serious weight problem. We tried everything to lose weight, but as many of you know, nothing worked in the long term. When you come to the end of your rope the way we did, there are only two things you can do: let go or start climbing. We decided to climb. Along the way we learned a thing or two about food, nutrition and most importantly, ourselves. In just under a year and a half, we've lost a combined 200 lbs. of excess weight. This adventure has been a life changing experience for us. We want to tell you about our journey in the hope that some of you may find some useful bit of wisdom to aid you on your own path to wellness.

We want you to know that the responsibility for your health really is in your hands and that you can make a significant difference in the quality of your life simply by improving your nutrition. Before you say, "I know, I've tried that before, but I couldn't stick with it," please know that those are the very words we used to use. We want to tell you that what we're talking about may be very different from what you currently think of as "healthy eating."

Sometimes, finding the truths that improve the quality of your life may mean stepping outside of your comfort zone and developing a new way of thinking. That's what happened to us. We adopted a Socratic philosophy of questioning the experts. We had to let go of the fear inherent in "thinking differently" and ask real questions about the validity of the health advice we were receiving. Why, for instance, has thirty years of government and industry sanctioned nutrition advice resulted in a significant number of Americans falling ill from excess weight and associated illnesses? Why has heart disease, practically unheard of 100 years ago, become such a scourge on the populace of this country? If the anti-dietary fat, high carbohydrate, highly processed foods diet that the experts have championed for the past 30 years has failed you as it has us, isn't it time you asked why?

In the course of our journey to wellness, we learned that taking a contrary stand on the matter of personal health, yields life long benefits. Those benefits include a new body, ripe with the strength and vigor of youth and a new mind, filled with awe at the wondrous potential we all harbor within. It goes without saying that we've come to some conclusions about food, nutrition and life, conclusions, which you'll find throughout this web site. The purpose of this site is not to provide easy answers for anyone, but to inspire difficult questions about how the richest nation in the world is slowly dying from a lethal diet of over consumption of synthetic foods. It has taken us over a year and a half to regain our health and despite the progress we've made, we suspect that in a year hence, we'll discover that there is so much more to learn.

The good news is that you don't have to be an expert to make sense of the bewildering mountain of information on personal health and there has never been a better time for individuals to take control of their lives. The information age is here and between public libraries and the power of the Internet, you now have access to most of the same nutrition information and research that your doctor does. Leverage that access! Be a contrarian. Ask enough of the right questions and you will very likely find the answers that are right for you.

We always knew we should maintain a balanced diet. We've come to learn that it is equally important for that balance to extend beyond the dinner table into every corner of our life. We've discovered that diet, finances, relationships, work and the strength of one's spiritual life, are all connected.

Our advice: Read, think and learn so that you may live a more fruitful and happy life.

Bread and money. Food and economics. Life and death. The real cost of what we eat is measured in the quality of our lives and in the quantity of our years.
